Receive palliative medical care
Palliative care is a medical support for people with severe or incurable illnesses. It helps improve their quality of life and supports their families. This care includes managing physical symptoms as well as social and emotional needs.
Depending on your needs, you can seek palliative care by contacting your polyclinic (local healthcare center), requesting a home visit, or visiting a hospice or other medical institutions.
In the regions of Armenia, outpatient palliative care is available in Ararat, Armavir, Kotayk, Tavush, Aragatsotn, and Vayots Dzor as part of the state order (a government-funded program).
About the program
Palliative care is provided in the following ways:
- Outpatient palliative care is available at polyclinics during working hours. It can also include home visits.
- Mobile palliative care is offered by medical institutions that provide outpatient or inpatient (hospital) services. This care can also be given at the patient’s home.
- Hospital (inpatient) palliative care is provided in licensed medical institutions for patients who need hospital treatment.
- Hospice care is for patients in the final stages of illness who need long-term hospital care in specialized palliative care centers.
Requirements
To receive palliative care, a person must have a serious, ongoing, or life-limiting illness that poses a threat to their own life or the safety of others.
Required documents
To receive palliative medical care and services, you must present:
- The patient's passport or ID card
- The patient's Public Services Number (PSN, also called Social services number)
Payment amount and procedure
Palliative care is provided free of charge, with co-payment, or on a paid basis.
Delivery period and procedure
Palliative care is carried out 24/7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
Specialists at polyclinic refer the patient to a palliative care unit. Once palliative care begins, all other types of medical services related to the same illness are stopped. A note about the transition to palliative care is added to the patient’s medical records, and the patient comes under the supervision of a palliative care specialist.
